I am a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Oregon (SEAO) and we had received an email, suggesting that we ought to get involved in the Architects in School program. I have worked with architects for 23 years or so and I should be able to fit in well. It “pairs practicing architects with classroom teachers to create and implement customized curricula for third through fifth grade students over a six-week residency” according to the website. It was originally initiated by Marjorie Wintermute and Jody Proppe three decades ago and is still relevant today. So orientation is on January 28th at Portland State University. It is there where we get teamed with teacher and go through planning. Several weeks after that I will start meeting once a week with this teacher at their school with the children for 1-2 hours. This is an awesome way to give back to the community and educate the children in future careers in architecture or structural engineering. I am looking forward to this.
